Jennifer Lawrence, prepare yourself for “The Hunger Games.”

A long casting search has officially come to an end. After weeks and months of feverish speculation over which young actress would land the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen, Lionsgate Entertainment has exclusively confirmed to MTV…

I only have a couple of quibbles, and then I will be excited that this movie is underway and that a talented actress got the role.

- This could have been a fantastic opportunity for Hollywood to cast someone of color in a major franchise and have it be in keeping with the themes of the original source. Katniss is by no means simply Caucasian, and while JL can certainly be dyed brunette and her beauty and bombshell body toned down, the fundamental misstep of not looking harder for an ethnic Katniss speaks tomes about what Hollywood is still intent on selling: the same old.

- Casting someone already in their 20s does a disservice to the original material as well. The youth of the tributes in the Hunger Games intensifies and highlights the brutality of the games. The more adult they look, the less appalling it is. And Katniss, although 16, is undernourished, making her look even younger. The important aspect that they are children will be lost the more adult and/or sexualized the film becomes.
